What price just a little space

It doesn’t have to be like this. The seat in our car is luxury by comparison but the standard economy airline seat is a miserable little space, where there’s just enough room for your knees unless you’re tall. If you’re over six feet in the old language, it can be torture.

It wasn’t always like this. Once upon a time, airlines asked their customers what they wanted. Not now. Nowadays, most airlines, faced with the choice of being the best or the cheapest, will take cheap every time.

Full service airlines can hear the low cost intruder’s footsteps. They fear today’s intruder is tomorrow’s landlord. Even full service airlines are behaving like low cost airlines, charging for things that used to be “free”.

But of all the things people want the airlines won’t give them is just a little space. The standard economy seat row used to be as much as 33 inches (the industry still uses imperial measure) from seatback to the seatback in front.

But, as the airlines have allocated more and more space to their business travellers, they’ve allocated less and adidas balerinky less to their economy passengers.

The average economy class seat now has only 31 inches of “pitch” (Qantas), but just 30″ in Jetstar domestic (31″ widebody international long haul) and as little as 30″ on Virgin Blue (30 31″).

Air New Zealand can be more generous but it’s a lucky dip. In our region, Thai Airways can be the best, adidas tenisky 31 33″ on most aircraft, but 34″ on its Boeing 777:200ERs, one of two aircraft (the other is the Airbus A340:600) it uses on Australian routes.

But the best airline in the world for seating space is a gasp! low cost airline, America’s JetBlue, which has a standard 34″ economy. Not enough? You can book a 38″ seat for an extra $US10 (short haul) or $20 long haul. It has only 150 seats in its Airbus A320s, compared with Tiger’s 180 and Jetstar’s 177.

And it still has great fare value.

Is seating space a big issue for you? Would you pay, say, 5% more for extra legroom in standard economy, instead of the high rates currently being charged for premium economy? Which airlines have given you the best deal on space have allowed you to sit in an exit row without extra charge, for example? Which airline is the best or just “feels” the best for seating space?

This is a big problem for me as my knees just do not fit in the space. Qantas has always been good to me as I get to the airport early and show them the problem. This secures an exit row.

I had a HORROR trip on Emirates once from Dubai to Melbourne. After being assured I had an exit row 3 times, when I got in the plane, that was not the case. Try sitting with your legs splayed out to maximum stretch for all those hours. To make matters worse, the lady in front was nursing a child and kept getting up and flopping back into her seat sending spasms of pain up my spine each time. My left knee was hard up against the 3 metal bars of the literature pocket.

My complaint to the airline got no response for over 4 months and was nothing but a policy statement. My reply has never been answered!

Tall people clearly do not matter to Emirates.

QANTAS and Jetstar should understand this and offer meaningful improvements for people to fly with them. Given these airlines fly some of the longest routes in the world you’d think they would make extra leg room a big selling point.

I am over 6ft and know how squashy an economy airline seat is.

I would happily pay extra for more leg room. I’ve even considered premium economy but it’s a bit steep. I’d happily pay for standard economy service with a reasonable premium for extra leg room.

Now that I know the Boeng 777 has 34 inches of pitch I’ll be looking for carriers with this plane.

Now that I think about it I still wouldn’t fly QANTAS or adidas balerinky Jetstar even if they offered extra legroom and paid me. I’d certainly use other carriers who offered extra leg room.

Unfortunately with QANTAS / Jetstar it’s a case of once bitten twice shy. There you go

I go out of my way to try and get extra leg room at 6′ 7″ in the old language it’s a necessity. Flying through the corporate jungle I have no say in the choice of airline but I’ll arrive at the airport super early to get an exit row or anything that resembles a seat with a bit of extra leg room thankfully I have success more often than not just by standing in front of them and explaining my predicament. But it’s a dreadfully uncomfortable flight when I don’t for both myself and the person in front who can’t put their seat back at all.

I’d happily pay some extra dollars to guarantee getting some extra leg room because it’s getting more and more difficult to snaffle the “good ” seats (and I’m sick of sitting at airports for hours on end). The population isn’t getting shorter. the battle for those exit rows is getting harder and harder.

I recently flew Emirates to Birmingham and back, so definitely long haul and with a 2 year old. We weren’t lucky enough to get exit row except on one of the 5 flights but I have to say that the space between the rows of seats felt more generous than other airlines I have flown (Qantas, Virgin Blue, Singapore), even though the people in front of me on all flights seemed determined to put their heads in my lap by reclining all the way (bad etiquette in economy class by the way!). Maybe it was because when they reclined back the base of their seat moved forwards, so I still had lots of legroom (I’m 5’11”) in fact I could stretch my legs out all the way under the seat, so it was quite good. Also, the planes were all very clean and the service was good all around OK for Emirates.

Being 6″3 I dont look forward to flying. I actually love flying itself, but the thought of squeezing knees into the zero space between me and the seat in front (make worse when someone reclines their seat) takes away any optimism I had about flying.

In my expereince Virgin Blue is the worst in terms of space (ive only been on the 737’s though). I even ask at check in for emergency exit rows and there are never any availible.

The last time I did i was told there was none availible. Yet I board and there were 3 EX seats free. I would be happy to pay for extra room if they gave me the opportunity to.

I also bring up the point that the seating arrangements would be unacceptable from a workplace OH standard, why are they allowed on planes, especially since it is not really safe to stand up?

I look around me on flight with people a lot shorter than I am squashed as well and I wonder why they cant take out one or two rows to give more room. We are packed in like sardine and we wonder why there is DVT?

The people who need very little sleep

What would you do if you had 60 days of extra free time a year? Ask Abby Ross, a retired psychologist from Miami, Florida, a She needs only four hours sleep a night, so has a lot of spare time to fill while the rest of the world is in the land of nod.

wonderful to have so many hours in my day I feel like I can live two lives, she says.

Short sleepers like Ross never feel lethargic, nor do they ever sleep in. They wake early normally around four or five o raring to get on with their day. Margaret Thatcher may have been one she famously said she needed just four hours a night, whereas Mariah Carey claims she needs 15.

What makes some people fantastically efficient sleepers, while others spend half their day snoozing? And can we change our sleeping pattern to make it more efficient?

View image of A few people need only a few hours for the brain to recharge (Credit: Thinkstock)

In 2009, a woman came into Ying Hui Fu lab at the University of California, San Francisco, complaining that she always woke up too early. At first, Fu thought the woman was an extreme morning lark a person who goes to bed early and wakes early. However, the woman explained that she actually went to bed around midnight and woke at 4am feeling completely alert. It was the same for several members of her family, adidas zx flux she said.

She went to bed around midnight and woke at 4am feeling completely alert

Fu and her colleagues compared the genome of different family members. They discovered a tiny mutation in a gene called DEC2 that was present in those who were short sleepers, but not in members of the family who had normal length sleep, nor in 250 unrelated volunteers.

When the team bred mice to express this same mutation, the rodents also slept less but performed just as well as regular mice when given physical and cognitive tasks.

Getting too little sleep normally has a significant impact on health, quality of life and life expectancy. It can cause depression, weight gain and put you at greater risk of stroke and diabetes. is so important, if you sleep well you can avoid many diseases, even dementia, says Fu. you deprive someone of just two hours sleep a day, their cognitive functions become significantly impaired almost immediately. Why sleep is so important is still a bit of a mystery

But why sleep is so important is still a bit of a mystery. The general consensus is that the brain needs sleep to do some housekeeping and general maintenance, since it doesn get much downtime during the day. While we sleep, the brain can repair cellular damage, remove toxins that accumulate during the day, boost flagging energy supplies and lay down memories.

View image of If you had more time in the morning, what would you do with it? (Credit: Thinkstock)

people with the DEC2 mutation can do the same cleaning up process in a shorter period of time they are just more efficient than the rest of us at sleeping, says Fu. how are they doing that? That the key question.

Since discovering the DEC2 mutation, a lot of people have come forward claiming to only sleep a few hours a day, says Fu. Most of these had insomnia, she says. not focusing on those people who have sleeping issues that make them sleep less, we wanted to focus on people who sleep for a few hours and feel great. I always feel great when I wake up Abby Ross

A positive outlook is common among all of the short sleepers that Fu has studied. she says, are all very energetic, very optimistic. It very common for them to feel like they want to cram as much into life as they can, but we not sure how or whether this is related to their mutations. would seem to fit that mould. always feel great when I wake up, she says. She has been living on four to five hours sleep every day for as long as she can remember.

hours in the morning around five o are just fabulous. It so peaceful and quiet and you can get so much done. I wish more shops were open at that time, but I can shop online, or I can read oh there so much to read in this world! Or I can go out and exercise before anyone else is up, or talk to people in other time zones. short sleeping patterns allowed her to complete university in two and a half years, as well as affording her time to learn lots of new skills. For example, just three weeks after giving birth to her first son, Ross decided to use one of her early mornings to attempt to run around the block. It took her 10 minutes. The following day she did it again, running a little further. She slowly increased the time she ran, finally completing not one, but 37 marathons one a month over three years plus several ultramarathons. can get up and do my exercise before anyone else is up and then it done, out of the way, she says.

View image of One way to ensure better sleep is to keep wake up times regular (Credit: Thinkstock)

As a child, Ross remembers spending very early mornings with her dad, another short sleeper. early mornings gave us such a special time together, she says. Now, if she ever oversleeps which she says has only ever happened a handful of times, her husband thinks she dead. just don lay in, I feel terrible if I did, she says.

Take a shortcut

Fu has subsequently sequenced the genomes of several other families who fit the criteria of short sleepers. They only just beginning to understand the gene mutations that lead to this talent, but in principle, she says, it might one day be possible to enable short sleeping in others.

The most effective way to improve your sleep is to fix your wake up time in the morning

Until then, are there any shortcuts to a more efficient night sleep for the rest of us? Neil Stanley, an independent sleep consultant, says yes: most effective way to improve your sleep is to fix your wake up time in the morning.

Stanley says that when your body gets used to the time it needs to wake up, it can use the time it has to sleep as efficiently as possible. show that your body prepares to wake up one and a half hours prior to actually waking up. Your body craves regularity, so if you chop and change your sleep pattern, your body hasn got a clue when it should prepare to wake up or not. could also do yourself a favour by ignoring society views on sleep, he says. this social view that short sleeping is a good thing and should be encouraged we always hauling out the example of Margaret Thatcher and top CEOs who don need much sleep. In fact, the amount of sleep you need is genetically determined as much as your height or shoe size. Some people need very little sleep, others need 11 or 12 hours to feel their best. says that a lot of people with sleep issues actually don have any problem sleeping, instead they have an expectation that they need to sleep for a certain amount of time. we could all figure out what kind of sleeper we are, and live our life accordingly, that would make a huge difference to our quality of life, he says.

Assessing the lesser known signings

Completed alongside the capture of Adam Lallana from Southampton, adidas obuv cislovanie Emre Can’s arrival at Liverpool was perhaps a little overshadowed. At just 20, the versatile German youth international should get his fair share of the limelight next season and prove to be an invaluable asset given his new club lacking of players in his position(s).

Can made 12 of his 29 starts in the league and UEFA Champions League for Bayer Leverkusen last season at left back, which has been a problem position at Anfield for some time now, but his strongest position is arguably in the middle of the park.

A highly capable defensive midfielder, the former Bayern graduate should take his place above Lucas and Joe Allen in the pecking order in that position, and his energy levels could be key alongside ageing captain Steven Gerrard.

Can averaged 2.6 tackles in the Bundesliga last season but also carries the ball from deep very well (2.5 successful dribbles per game). Although Italian front man Pelle just edged it (7.96 to 7.80), it is Tadic from whom the magic is expected.

Serbian playmaker Tadic can play across a number of attacking positions, much like the man he is tasked with replacing, Lallana, and has all of the tools to impress in the Premier League.

The 25 year old created 46 more chances than any other player in the Eredivisie last season (133), as well as completing the most accurate through balls (16) and crosses (64) in the league to help Twente to a third placed finish.

SIEM DE JONG (NEWCASTLE UNITED)

In a move that caught many off guard, Ajax captain Siem de Jong completed a switch to Newcastle United after an injury ravaged campaign with the Eredivisie champions.

Fit again and already firing having scored in each of Newcastle first friendly fixtures thus far including a stunning strike against Oldham Athletic fans will hope for more from the 25 year old than his younger brother, Luuk, was able to offer on loan last season. Capable in both a centre forward and midfield role, De Jong’s involvement with Ajax was limited to just 16 league starts last season, though he did manage to net seven times.

The Dutch international should add firepower to a side in desperate need of it following the loss of top scorer Loic Remy.

MAME BIRAM DIOUF (STOKE CITY)

Though his name may not spark great excitement following a disappointing spell in the Premier League with Manchester United and later on loan at Blackburn Rovers, it is worth noting that Mame Biram Diouf is still only 26.

A productive stint in the Bundesliga has left the striker confident that he is better equipped to take on English football this time around and, having signed on a free transfer, his arrival at Stoke represents impressive business on Mark Hughes’ part.

Diouf is a good athlete and offers the physicality that Stoke demand from a lone front man having won 5.1 aerial duels per game with Hannover last season.

BAFETIMBI GOMIS (SWANSEA CITY)

It looks as though it could be a busy summer for Swansea City, who have allowed Michu to leave the club on loan to Napoli somewhat bafflingly and could yet lose more of their star men.

But Garry Monk has managed to complete an impressive signing in the form of French international forward Bafetimbi Gomis and that is made all the more so by the fact that the 28 year old has joined on a free. Though he is no longer in the reckoning for Les Bleus, here is a man who has registered double figures in the league in each of his five seasons at Lyon, including 14 in the previous campaign.

DIEGO POYET (WEST HAM UNITED)

It is hardly the most eye catching signing of the summer so far but West Ham United may have stolen a march on a number of top clubs in convincing former Charlton Athletic youngster Diego Poyet son of Sunderland boss Gus that Upton Park is the right place for adidas neo his development.

An 83.2% pass accuracy is no mean feat in the Championship, particularly for a 19 year old, while no player in the entire division averaged more tackles per game (4.3) and no team mate averaged more interceptions (2.5).

Given that West Ham had to look to the ageing Matt Taylor to partner Mark Noble towards the tail end of last season, the teenager could get more game time than some may expect.

TOMS Founder Blake Mycoskie Promises Big Investment

TOMS founder and chief shoe giver Blake Mycoskie is making a lofty promise to both customers and critics: By the end of 2015, TOMS will produce one third of all the shoes it donates in the countries that are the the focus of its giveaway programs.

Critics have blasted the shoe company, dismissing its one for one business model as one big marketing ploy that does nothing to bolster local economies.

“Some of the criticism we’ve had is that we’re not using our company to create jobs,” Mycoskie said in an interview Monday. “And I think that it’s a fair criticism.”

For every pair of shoes it sells, TOMS gives away a second pair to a person in need, adidas balerinky a model that has conjured a public image of altruism and a $250 million business, according to Fast Company.

Creating jobs in developing countries requires significant commitment and investment in the local economy, far more than the shoe “giving trips” that made TOMS famous. And the endeavor will be more complicated than simply opening a factory and letting locals make some shoes. Over the next two years, TOMS will have to find reliable factories, build infrastructure and maintain human rights standards, Mycoskie said.

“To go into these countries Haiti, Ethiopia, Kenya there’s a lot of good that can be done by creating some jobs,” said Mycoskie. “But you have to be even more cautious with human rights and even more thoughtful in how you make your agreements with factories.”

Mycoskie started TOMS in 2006 with no experience in the apparel and footwear industry. He described his time building an international supply chain as a massive “learning experience” in which he was burned many times. Currently, TOMS makes its shoes in China, Argentina and Kenya. The company plans to start producing in India “for sure,” Mycoskie said, and wants to enter Brazil and Haiti, too.

Then there’s Ethiopia, where Mycoskie has previously tried to produce his wares. This will be his third attempt to manufacturing in the East African nation, after the first two attempts failed.

Mycoskie said the first factory he worked with in Ethiopia charged TOMS for one product but gave it another. The second factory was overly ambitious and couldn’t handle the quantity of orders TOMS demanded, he said. The company was forced to sever both relationships.

He said he also ran into some trouble with faulty electricity grids. Sometimes, the power would just shut off, forcing factories to remain stagnant for days or weeks on end.

“We can’t have our most business critical supply chains attached to these factories,” said Mycoskie. He stressed that diversifying manufacturing is wholly important to the success of a global apparel business. “That way, if [some factories] fall behind, it doesn’t sink the ship,” he said.

It’s harder to manage production in countries without a heavily established apparel industry because they don’t have the same infrastructure as, for instance, China, which has networks of reliable roads, ports, power, and other systems that have been built up over the past decade.

“We can only go to places that have some form of an apparel industry already,” said Mycoskie. “You’ve got to have some basic manufacturing processes in place.”

Ethiopia’s apparel and footwear industry is still in the early stages of growth, but the country has drawn the attention of international companies. Retail mammoths like H Tesco and Primark have garments made in the country, attracted by a major adidas obuv vypredaj government driven expansion program. Chinese shoemaker Huajian is investing $2 billion in a “shoe city” manufacturing zone, hoping to make the nation a global hub for the shoe industry.

Mycoskie plans to bring in machinery from abroad, and expertise for training locals will come from experts in China, Vietnam and adidas tenisky other places with a history of shoe manufacturing. His team is also trying to make TOMS’ supply chain “iron tight” in Africa by signing on auditing firms with experience in apparel hubs like China.

“You have to have people who represent your company in the factories every day to make sure the product are the right quality, how they’re treating workers everything,” he said.

Side by side: Joe, 26, looked proud to be going to a high fashion party with his girlfriend

Proud Joe stuck by her side as they made their way into the bash the former Jonas Brothers star was clad in the same navy ensemble he had worn earlier in the day to support his other half at the fashion show.

Gigi and Joe have only been an item for a few months, but they have been inseperable all summer, and so it seemed fitting that he was there for her big runway moment during Milan Fashion Week.

However, the natural beauty didn’t let her beau’s presence put her off as she strutted down the catwalk in killer heels and a skin tight mini dress.

Leggy display: Gigi was supported by her loved up boyfriend Joe when she hit the runway for Versace’s Spring/Summer ’16 show in Milan earlier on Friday

With a blank expression and fixed gaze, the blonde beauty who counts Taylor Swift and Kendall Jenner as best friends looked as though she meant business as she showcased her incredible figure in one of Donatella Versace’s latest creations.

Joe proudly looked on from the sidelines along with the likes of Heidi Klum and Naomi Campbell.

The singer looked dapper in a black and blue patterned suit but wore a similar blank expression to his girlfriend as he posed for photos at the event.

Best seats in the house: The stylishly clad crooner sat in the front row alongside DJ Leigh Lezark

Following her fleeting appearance Joe posted a photo of Bella in action on his Instagram page. Proud of what he’d seen, he captioned the snap: ‘My Girl Just Killed It.

The model revealed in a Periscope Q ‘We met at the Grammys when I was 13 years old, And he asked me to a baseball game, and I said, “No.”

‘I was so nervous; I literally didn’t even know what it meant to hang out with a boy,’ she explained.

Making the effort: The handsome star dressed to impress in a navy marble effect suit and T shirt

Hinting that Joe perhaps didn’t know how young the budding model was at the time, she added: ‘And also, Grammys are on a Sunday, and I didn’t want to tell him that I had school the next day, so I was like, “No, maybe next time.”

A six year age gap between the couple means that when Gigi was 13, Joe was 19, but as ET Online explained, Gigi may have got the details mixed up.

The blonde runway star was not pictured at the 2009 awards show, only the 2010 one which she attended with parents David and Yolanda Foster.

Therefore, Gigi was likely 14 at the time.

However, it’s likely that Joe didn’t realise Gigi’s age, as the blonde beauty remembered that the persistent actor ‘wrote his number on a piece of paper and gave it to my mom.’

While at an after party for the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas this past weekend, Joe gave an adorable reaction when hearing his girlfriend’s name in a word association game.

The couple were first spotted together in May, shortly after Gigi split with Australian crooner Cody Simpson. Daughter Khloe Kardashian is also seen looking very worried and supporting her mom near the driver\’s side of the car.
